Barbarella Psychadella Band

May 5, 2010

Nick Teehan and I are neighbours. I work a few dozen feet west and below where he lives. Last week on the day before his birthday I ran into him with his arms full of acquisitions gleaned from the thrifty strip of Bloor between his place and mine. Today he came to visit my work while he was doing his laundry, so tonight I decided to visit him at his work at the Rex- watching him sing and play sax.

Tonight he was playing with Barbarella which is my favourite incarnation of his music yet. What they do is enough of a jazz thing to do at the Rex, but it’s also as wacky and fun voyage across the universe in search of new musical absurdities. The band came out dressed in “jambot” robot suits while Nick told the story of Barbarella into a voice changing microphone. It was hilarious good time, although I enjoyed the weird bits more than the jazz standards sounding stuff.
