Scott Pilgrim- coolest shit ever

September 2, 2010

Have you seen Scott Pilgrim?

I just went to go see it yesterday with my roommate Mark, and that movie was the coolest shit ever. The story is based on the comic book series Scott Pilgrim and set in Toronto. And like some of my favourite Toronto vices, this film appeals to my nerd sensibilities.

The film has appeal for music geeks, video game nerds, and comic book fans alike. Visually, the directors have chosen to make the movie take on qualities of a both a video game and graphic novel- including animated elements to express what is going on in a particular scene. The movie is a battle movie where Scott Pilgrim has to defeat Ramona’s seven ex’s (not ex-boyfriends) in order to win her heart. The battles play off like video game play with secret weapons to pick up and one-ups, and in one particularly glorious scene- remixed video game music from The Legend of Zelda is used to set the mood of a scene.

The movie is also about Scott Pilgrim looking for glory- which he tries to earn through his band called Sex Bob-omb. All of the music for Sex Bob-omb has been realized by Beck, and its great. Music by their rival band was done by Broken Social Scene. And the whole thing is set in Toronto, with gratuitious shots of the city- including one scene where Scott is fighting his second foe at Casa Loma. The second ex is a movie star, and Casa Loma is done up like it’s supposed to be New York. During the fight the pair burst through the fake New York skyline and the real skyline of Toronto becomes visible. It’s as if to say- ha ha New York. We are young and happening.

Jason Schwartzmann plays the boss of all the bad guys, as well as an American record label exec that Scott Pilgrim’s band must impress if they want fame. He is amazing in this role of slimy hipster king. Hipsters are the subject, and often the butt of the joke in this film.

But that’s enough talking about it. Go see it. It pretty much gives our strange Toronto 20something existence validity. It’s cool. Go watch it.

I’m an American with a number of friends in Toronto and I loved this film! So great to see all the Toronto references, and the film itself was really fun, original, and beautifully shot and edited. Too bad it didn’t get as much box office as it deserved…

It really did not get nearly as much box office buzz as it should have- which is a shame because it’s kind of a zeitgeist for my generation. I think this is every lame 20something’s secret fantasy. And the whole thing was so artfully done.
