Urban Ex Charity Masquerade

June 7, 2011

Earlier this spring I wrote about my friend, the homeless poet Robert Payne. I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people who were interested in his story and his poetry.

On Sunday June 12th, a benefit is being held by an organization called Urban Ex. They’re an organization which created urban experiences centered around the arts and social justice. Robert works closely with them,  and part of the experience is making zines with Rob and trying to sell them during the day- before spending a night on the streets with him.

Details to flow below. I am donating some art to the silent auction part of the evening, which includes but is not limited to the pieces below.

ABOUT UrbanEx: (
UrbanEx believes you can “Change the world by changing you.” It is an arts, culture, and social justice experience. Through Urban Excursions, teams of youth, university/college students, adults, social agencies, media, corporate executives, artists, etc. come from all over the world to Toronto to experience a week in other people’s shoes. UrbanEx also provides leadership, knowledge, ideas and experiences through speaking engagements and training exercise that see entire communities actively engaged with each other resulting in effective change. Through advocacy we create new opportunities to facilitate effective social conflict resolution strategies. UrbanEx is pretty intense because you can’t measure its worth by tasks accomplished, rather you must reflect upon how deeply it reforms your heart and through the process you will learn that in order to change the world you must first change how you occur in it.

“Change the world by changing you.”
