#Iwanttodrawyourband Rae Spoon
This image of Rae Spoon was drawn last night, at their album release party @ the Gladstone Hotel. I attended the first of 2 back-to-back shows, where the queer artist presented “My Prairie Home”. The album acts as a sort of musical accompaniment to the documentary of the same name, where Spoon revisits Alberta- and their experience of growing up gay in the prairies.
The folkier sound on the new album is a departure from their usual electronic sound- or as Spoon mentioned during the show, a coming full circle. The show atmosphere was intimate, & respectful- and many of the audience late comers opted to sit on the floor so as not to obscure anyone’s view of the performance. The intensity of the show built as it continued, and near the end of the set we were treated to the singer’s take on grunge. The genre, they noted, that got them into playing music in the first place.
My only complaint is that the show was too short.
I’m really looking forward to checking out the documentary when it hits theatres later this fall (no official date yet), and picked up a copy of the author’s small press book “First Spring Grass Fire”. (Which of course, I got signed like the fan girl that I am).
